Book Description

FIRST BRANGWYN EDITION IN VERY RARE BRANGWYN DESIGNED LEATHER BINDINGS. TWO VOLUMES. Small 8vo. (5.6 x 3.5 inches). Illustrated with decorative half titles and title pages to both volumes, and portrait frontis in Volume one, all by Brangwyn. Original publishers delux tan lambskin leather bindings with blind stamped lettering and Arts and crafts style decorations to the spine and both boards, designed by Frank Brangwyn. Plain endpapers. All edges gilt. Some minor rubbing to the edges but overall very good and attractive examples of these beautiful books in the very rare Frank Brangwyn designed leather bindings. Originally published by Davit Stott in 1889 and edited by W. H. Bennett, the text of this edition appears to have been taken over by Gibbings and Company, who commissioned Frank Brangwyn to provide illustrations for the frontis, half and full title pages, and presumably the bindings as I can find no earlier book published with this design, for this edition. The floral design on the boards was also used by Gibbings, this time tooled in gilt, on the front board of the 1908 edition of Walter Raleigh's The Last Fight of the Revenge which Brangwyn illustrated. No copies, in this or any other binding, are listed on Copac. Worldcat confusingly lists several copies but the listings I checked on are all for the earlier Stott edition, which didn't feature Brangwyns designs.
