(ANON) “WOODCARVING IN THREE WEST COUNTRY CHURCHES"
Book Description
Circa 1950's Book of Manuscript Illustration and original coloured drawings and watercolour paintings.
A superbly produced manuscript book which highlights the woodcarvings in the churches at Holbeton (Devon) as well as at St.Nonna's in Altarnun and St.Buryan (Cornwall). Approx 24.5 cm X 32 cm. Recently restored to the same style as the original in two-tone cloth over boards, and now protected with a removable clear cover. Internally, a few foxing spots, although nothing serious . In total 25 original drawings in a mixture of pen and ink and watercolour and crayon and chalk, as well as seven full pages of hand written illuminated text with lovely watercolour marginal illustrations. There are also five pages of titles in calligraphic script. Several of the larger drawings were executed on paper which has then been affixed to the book leaves. There is no mention of the creator of this work-one of the pages has the initials "JM" in the margin. The drawings are unsigned ,but share an affinity with John Piper's style, and are extremely accomplished. A delightful collection of architectural drawings and paintings.
