Edward Augustus Inglefield led this 1852 search for Sir John Franklin’s expedition, whose ships Erebus and Terror were lost in the Arctic following their departure from Britain in 1845. The expedition charted about 1000km of new coast, and discovered Inglefield Gulf, before investigating Jones Sound, Lancaster Sound, Barrow Strait and Beechey Island, from this point returning to Britain.
