Emily Hornby (1833-1906) was the daughter of Reverend Thomas and Margaret Hornby. She climbed in the Alps in the 1870s and 1880s, twice making an ascent of the Matterhorn. “In December 1905 she and two sisters made a dahabieh journey up the Nile . . . The sisters went on by rail to Khartoum and took a short excursion up the White Nile” (Theakstone). Her journal of this trip, which closes mid-sentence, seems to have been published posthumously in 1906, and a note at the front of the volume reads “I was very sorry not to have more copies of the first issue of this journal. I have therefore had it re-printed, with illustrations from drawings by F. M. Hornby taken at the time. M.L.H. 1908” (p. 6).
