A pleasing second edition copy (published a year after the first) of Mary Pilkington’s educational and moralising 1799 text for young women, illustrated with numerous woodcuts after Thomas Bewick; comprising examples from the lives of prominent women from history and literature (classical, biblical, and modern) exemplifying (mostly) favoured aspects of femininity, including Queens, rulers and nobility (Cleopatra, Catherines Parr, Aragon, & de Medici, Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots), educated women (Anna Commena/ Komnene), and wives, mothers and daughters (Agrippina, wife of Germanicus, Olympias, mother of Alexander the Great, Elfrida, daughter of the Earl of Devonshire, Penelope).
