[A Bagster English Bible with copious manuscript annotations] The English Version of the Polyglott Bible
Book Description
8vo. Lacks prelims up until [A7], lacks endpapers. In other words, only the last two pages of the preface remain, followed by the Old Testament text. New Testament complete however with title page dated 1833. ANNOTATED AND UNDERLINED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Contemporary straight grain morocco sombre binding, with silver clasps (intact), several dried bay leaves loosely inserted. The annotations appear to be by a believer, one who is attempting to read and understand both the New and the Old Testament closely. So extensive are the annotations that there does not appear to be one overriding concern, though many passages commenting on God are marked, and it is possible that a careful analysis would decide that a dominant theme is the attempt to establish a personal relationship with God. In the Old Testament, particularly Genesis, Moses and Ezra receive attention, but also Deuteronomy, Ezekiel, Joshua and Judges, Ruth and Samuel, and others. The New Testament is less studied apparently, though Luke and John receive attention, and especially the Epistles. The writing is small, but legible throughout. Further photos provided gladly upon request. Such extensively annotated Bibles are rather unusual, and it would certainly repay further study as a way of understanding the relationship between Biblical text and faith in the first half of the nineteenth century.
